J. Mavrogordato, Esq.
(1830-1885)
17 March 1861

Volume 2, page 322, sitting number 2578.

Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'J. Mavrogordato,' this is probably John Mavrogordato who appears on the 1861 census living at 8 St George's Villas, Canonbury, London. The 31-year-old 'Clerk in a Merchant's office' was unmarried. He gave London as his place of birth.

Ten years later he was living at 37 Park Fields at Broughton in Lancashire. In the interim, he had acquired a wife, Kalinka, and their marriage had produced four children. John now gave 'East India Merchant' as his profession.

Elsewhere, his wife's name appears at Catherine. According to the 1861 census, she was the daughter of John Chaviara, a merchant born in Turkey. According to the registration of her marriage in 1863, her full name was Catherine John Nicholas Chaviara. According to the 1881 census she was born in Vienna.

John Mavrogordato died, aged 56, on 4 December 1885 at Brighton in Sussex. An announcement of his death in the Pall Mall Gazette describes him as 'John Mavrogordato of Ralli Bro[ther]s, Manchester,' which was the most successful expatriate Greek merchant business of the nineteenth century.

According to the abstract of his will, he died at 83 Church Road, 'West Brighton' but his usual address was Letton Lodge, Broughton Park, Higher Brougton, Manchester. He left an estate valued at £17,538.

His wife died, aged 81, in Hove in 1924.
