Born on 1 November 1814, Bartle John Laurie Frere was the head of a well-known law firm in Lincoln's Inn Fields and a president of the Law Society. In 1854, he inherited Twyford House at Bishop's Stortford from his father, Charles Frere. His London residence was 46 Bedford Square.

Bartle John Laurie Frere died, aged 78, on 25 January 1893 at 46 Bedford Square, leaving an estate valued at £114,392. The cause of death was pneumonia. (Cork Constitution, 30 January 1893). He was buried in the churchyard of Thorley Church near Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire.
