Miss Fladgate
8 June 1862

Volume 7, page 82, sitting number 8575.

Identified on the album page as 'Miss Fladgate,' this is possibly Miss Geraldine Fladgate, daughter of Francis Fladgate, a 'barrister (not in practice)' at the time of the 1861 census.

Alternatively, given the context of the album, this may well be one of the daughters of John Alexander Fladgate, Francis Fladgate's youngest brother, who was a founding partner in Taylor, Fladgate and Yeatman, importers of port wine from Portugal. The eldest sister, who would have been the only one entitled to use just her surname without a qualifying forename or initial, was Margaret Ellen Fladgate. Baptised on 29 December 1840, she married firstly António d'Almeida Campos on 23 April 1864 and had issue; she married secondly Thomas William Murray-Allan and had issue. She died on 5 April 1923.

[From an album compiled by Charles Balfour, a British wine merchant importing sherry and port from Portugal. Born in Edinburgh on 22 August 1822, his father was James Balfour. In May 1852 he married Mary Ermelinda, daughter of Robert Woodhouse of Oporto in Portugal. Charles Balfour died on 12 January 1876.]
