Born on 21 April 1823 in France, Catherine Ellen Caroline Colyear Brecknell was the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Brecknell. She was baptised in Boulogne on 20 May 1823. Unusually, she was baptised again on 5 February 1834 at St Mary's, Paddington Green. At the time of her second baptism, her parents were living at 6 Hyde Park Place, London. 

On 24 August 1853 at Mayfield in Staffordshire, she married Reverend Talbot Aden Ley Greaves, then the Vicar of Mayfield, later the Rector of Melcombe Regis, Weymouth. According to announcements of her marriage, she was 'the only daughter of the late Captain and Lady Catherine Brecknell, and niece of the last Earl of Portmore' (Staffordshire Advertiser, 3 September 1853). 

The couple appear on the 1861 census living at the Rectory in Melcombe Regis. Also present on the night of the census were a niece and five servants. 

Mrs Talbot Greaves died, aged 62, on 8 December 1885 at 15 The Paragon, Bristol. She left an estate valued at £22,289.

On 16 February 1887 at St James's in Paddington her widower married, secondly, Anna Louisa Pargeter, daughter of Hanbury Pargeter.

Reverend Talbot Aden Ley Greaves 'of Stoke-house Stoke Bishop Gloucestershire' died on 20 February 1899, leaving an estate valued at £59,486.
