Almost certainly the Joseph Roberts who appears on the 1861 census living at Southleigh, Lemon Street, Kenwyn, Cornwall. Born at Helston in Cornwall, at the time of the census he was 46. He gave his profession as 'solicitor.'

On 23 May 1850 at St Andrew's, Clifton [Gloucestershire], he married Mary Anne Peppin Paul, née Luxmore, widow of William Paul of Truro in Cornwall. Mrs Paul's first husband had died in 1841, leaving her with five children.

Joseph Roberts died, aged 62, on 30 August 1877 at Southleigh, his residence at Truro in Cornwall, leaving an estate valued at £25,000. Probate was granted to his sisters Emily Grylls of Truro and Charlotte Anne Roberts of Helston.
