Marquess Townshend
(1798-1863)
1 November 1860

Volume 2, page 70, sitting number 1578.

Rear-Admiral John Townshend, 4th Marquess Townshend, was born on 28 March 1798, the son of the Right Honourable John Townshend. On 31 December 1855 he succeeded his cousin, becoming the 4th Marquess Townshend.

He died on 10 September 1863 at the age of 64 and was succeeded by his son, John Villiers Stuart Townshend.

An obituary appeared in the Ipswich Journal (19 September 1863). 'The Marquess Townshend died on Thursday, the 10th inst., at Raynham Hall, aged 64. The deceased Marquess, who was a Rear-Admiral of the Navy, had been shooting and was returning home on his pony, when, it is supposed, he was seized with apoplexy, and fell off in a fit. His Lordship was taken to the hall, and medical aid was called in, but he expired on the morning of Thursday. Marquess Townshend was the second son of Lord John, sometime M.P. for Cambridge, and was born the 28th of March, 1798. He married, 18th of August, 1825, Elizabeth Jane, eldest daughter of Lord George Stuart. The Marquess was member for Tamworth for many years, and was a strenuous supporter of Reform. He is succeeded by his eldest son, Viscount Raynham, M.P. for that borough, by whose elevation to the Peerage a vacancy occurs in the representation.'
