Duke of Atholl
(1814-1864)

Volume 1, page 143, sitting number 777.

George Augustus Frederick John Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl (1814-1864) was the son of 1st Lord Glenlyon, by Lady Emily Percy, daughter of the second Duke of Northumberland.

In 1839 he married Anne Home Drummond (1814-1897), only daughter of Henry Home Drummond of Blair Drummond, Perthshire. She served the Queen as Mistress of the Robes during Lord Derby's short-lived government of 1852 and subsequently as a Lady of the Bedchamber.

The Duke's residences were St George's Hotel on Albemarle Street in London and Blair Castle in Perthshire.

He died on 16 January 1864 at Blair Castle in Perthshire. 'From the nature of his disease, cancer in the neck, his family and friends have, for some months past, been prepared for this bereavement' (York Herald, 23 January 1864).
