Lord Alexander Russell

Lord Alexander George Russell was a younger son of John Russell (1766-1839), 6th Duke of Bedford, by his second wife, Lady Georgina Gordon. He was born on 16 September 1821.

On 3 July 1844 he married Anne Emily Worsley Holmes, daughter of Sir Leonard Worsley Holmes, 9th Baronet. He gained the rank of General in the service of the Rifle Brigade, and was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (GCB).

He died, aged 85, on 10 January 1907 at 'Woodeaton,' Islip, Oxfordshire. He left an estate valued at £3957.

According to a brief obituary in the Pall Mall Gazette (12 January 1907): 'General Lord Alexander Russell, K.C.B., died at Woodeaton, Oxford, on Thursday, in his eighty-sixth year. He was the tenth son of the sixth Duke of Bedford. In 1847 he was A.D.C. to the Governor of Canada; he was at the Cape in 1852-3, and took part in the Kaffir War, and also at Sebastopol.'
