Mrs Joseph Hill
(1832-1906)
16 March 1861

Volume 2, page 318, sitting number 2562.

Born in Brighton in or about 1832, Emily Bean was the second of the five daughters of Felix Frederick Freeman Bean and his wife Fanny. At the time of the 1851 census, the family were living at Gosden Cottage at Westbourne in Sussex. Felix gave 'Landed Proprietor' as his profession.

On 12 January 1854 at St Marylebone in London Emily married John Isaac Marfleet, son of John Isaac Marfleet of Winthorpe Grove in Nottinghamshire. The marriage produced one daughter, Edith Mary Marfleet, born in 1855 at Southwell in Nottinghamshire. John Isaac Marfleet died, aged 32, on 8 August 1856 at Westhorpe Lodge, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

On 14 December 1859 Mrs Marfleet married Reverend Joseph Hill at Holy Trinity in Marylebone.

The couple appear on the 1861 census living at West Peckham, in Kent. Although it isn’t mentioned in his clerical history, Reverend Hill was apparently Curate of West Peckham at this date. Living with them was Hill's six-year-old step-daughter, Edith Emily Marfleet.

Mrs Emily E. Hill appears on the 1871 census, living with her husband at the Rectory of Monnington-on-Wye, Herefordshire. Edith, now 16, was still living with them. Also present on the night of the census were Reverend Hill’s own children: Felix (10), Alice (9), Arthur (7), Gertrude (5), William (4), Thomas (3), and Robert (2). The children had a governess and Mrs Hill had four servants to help her run the house.

In 1901 the Hills were living or staying at Mylor House at Branscombe in Dorset with two of their daughters, Alice and Gertrude, and two of their sons, William and Thomas.

Mrs Hill died, aged 75, at Wimblington in Cambridgeshire in 1906.
