Lord Ossulston
(1850-1879)

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Lady Tankerville's child,' an inked inscription recto in the lower margin identifies the sitter as 'Lord Ossulston.']

Lady Olivia Tankerville (1830-1922), née Montagu, was the daughter of the 6th Duke of Manchester. On 29 January 1850 she married Charles Augustus Bennet (1810-1899), from 1859 the 6th Earl of Tankerville. The couple had five children. This is their eldest son, Charles Bennet, Lord Ossulston born on 31 December 1850 at 23 Hertford Street, Mayfair.

He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Rifle Brigade.

Lord Ossulston died of cholera at Abbotabad, Peshawar, India, on 29 June 1879. 'Lord Ossulston was attacked on his return from Afghanistan to join the head-quarters of his regiment at Umballa' (Worcestershire Chronicle, 12 July 1879).
