Reverend Edward John Shepherd was the Rector of Trottiscliffe, a village near Maidstone in Kent, and the Rector of Luddesdown, also in Kent.

The only son of Francis Shepherd of Beverley in Yorkshire, he was educated at Richmond School, Yorkshire. He originally went up Caius College Cambridge but migrated to Trinity on 13 October 1821. He was admitted at Gray's Inn on 28 April 1820 but must have decided on a change of career as he was ordained a deacon in 1827 and a priest later that same year. He was the Rector of Trottiscliffe from 1827 to 1874 and the Rector of Luddesdown from 1834 to 1856. He was also the author of various books on church history.

On 30 April 1836 he married Catherine Heyman Lucas, youngest daughter of Matthias Prime Lucas, Esq. of Wateringbury in Kent, an alderman of the City of London. Their marriage produced three sons.

Revered Edward John Shepherd died, aged 73, at Trottiscliffe on 28 November 1874. His estate was valued at under £7000.
