Prince Mikhail Gortchakov
(1793-1861)

Mikhail Dmitriyevich Gorchakov was a Russian military officer and statesman who played a major role in the Crimean War (1853–56) and served as the Russian viceroy in Poland (1856–61).

He also served in the Russo-Turkish War (1828-29), the suppression of the Polish insurrection (1830-31), and the campaign in Hungary (1849). In 1853 he became chief-of-staff of the Russian army. He succeeded A. S. Menshikov as Russian commander-in-chief in the Crimean War and heroically defended Sevastopol.
