A post-mortem portrait of Léon Gambetta (1832-1882), the French republican leader and statesman who was largely responsible for French resistance to Prussia after the collapse of the Second Empire.

He died on 31 December 1882 at Ville-d'Avray in the western suburbs of Paris.
