Born 2 March 1834, a son of Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott (1806-1894), 5th Duke of Buccleuch. In 1856 he was appointed a Captain in the 15th Dragoons. In 1863 he transferred to the Midlothian.

Lord Walter Scott died, aged 61, on 3 March 1895 at Boughton House near Kettering in Northamptonshire. He left an estate valued at £20,090.

'Lord Walter Scott died on Sunday morning at his residence Broughton [sic] House, Kettering. Deceased was the third son of the late Duke of Buccleuch and brother of the present Duke. He was born in 1834. For some time past he had been lame owing to a fall in the park' (Dundee Evening Telegraph, 4 March 1895).

A detailed account of his funeral appeared in the Northampton Mercury (15 March 1895). The remains of the deceased nobleman were 'encased in a shell and oak coffin' and 'interred in a brick vault, adjoining that in which the remains of Lady Walter were interred; and the grave was lined with moss and decorated with arum lilies, lilies of the valley, white tulips, white azalia, and spirea, this work having been satisfactorily carried out by Mr F. Jones (the gardener at Boughton House).'
