Countess of Albemarle
(1806-1885)

Volume 1, page 95, sitting number 582.

Born Susan Trotter in or about 1806, her father was Sir Coutts Trotter, 1st Bart. On 4 August 1831, she married George Thomas Keppell (1799-1891), later General George Thomas Keppel, 6th Earl of Albemarle. From the death of her brother-in-law on 15 March 1851, she was styled the Countess of Albemarle.

The Countess of Albemarle died at the age of 79 on 3 August 1885 at Lyndhurst in Hampshire.

The following paragraph is her obituary from the Morning Post (4 August 1885);

'We deeply regret to have to record the death of the venerable Countess of Albemarle, who died on Friday last at Lyndhurt, in Sussex, the home of her daughter, Lady Augusta Noel, in her 80th year. Lady Albemarle, who was an impersonification of benevolence, and gave [her life] up while she had health and strength to good works, will be missed [more] among the poor and in various forms of home mission work than in society, in which in late years she took little part. An admirable wife and a devoted mother, of a deeply religious character, the late Lady Albemarle was warmly loved not only by her family circle but by a host of friends, who during her long life had been drawn to her by the strongest ties of sympathy and affection. Lord Albemarle, the last veteran of the Waterloo heroes who used to assemble at Apsley House, is thus bereft of the partner of his long and honoured life. Her mourners will be be accompanied in person or in thought by many who had learnt to esteem at their true worth the fine qualities and truly Christian disposition of a lady sincerely lamented by all who had the good fortune to be brought within the sphere of her friendship or her benevolence. The funeral will take place to-morrow at Quiddenham Church, when her son, Viscount Bury, and her three grandsons will bear the pall. [...] The Countess was the third daughter of the late Sir Coutts Trotter, Bart., by Margaret Gordon, youngest daughter of Alexander Gordon (Lord of Sessions), Lord Rockville, and was married to the Earl of Albemarle, then Colonel Keppel, in August, 1831, by whom she leaves surviving children the Right Hon. Viscount Bury, Lady Louisa, married to the Hon. Frederick William Charteris, and Lady Augusta, married to Mr Ernest Noel, MP.' [Corrected to remove two typos from the original.]
