George John Danvers Butler was born on 6 December 1794, the son of Augustus Richard Butler and Mary née Danvers. On 29 August 1815 he married Francis Arabella Fremantle, daughter of Colonel Stephen Francis William Fremantle,

He succeeded his cousin in 1847, becoming the 5th Earl of Lanesborough in the peerage of Ireland. In 1849 he was elected a representative peer.

He died on 7 July 1866, aged 71, and was succeeded by his half-brother’s son, Captain John Vansittart Danvers-Butler.

'The death is announced of the Earl of Lanesborough, which took place on Saturday afternoon, at his residence in Great Stanhope-street, Mayfair. His lordship had been in a very delicate state of health for some time, and a few days since became much worse. The deceased, George John Danvers Butler-Danvers, fifth earl, was born in 1794; married, first, 1815, the third daughter of the late Colonel S. Francis W. Fremantle, who died in 1850; secondly, in 1851, the youngest daughter of Charles Bishop, Esq., of Sunbury, and relict of Sir Richard Hunter, Knt.; succeeded his cousin in 1847; elected an Irish representative peer in 1849. His lordship is succeeded in the title by his nephew, John Vansittart Danvers Butler, son of the late Hon. Charles Augustus Butler, born in 1839' (Pall Mall Gazette, 9 July 1866).
