Lady Clarendon
(1814-1874)

Volume 1, page 129, sitting number 719.

Lady Katherine Grimston was the daughter of James Walter Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam and Lady Charlotte Jenkinson. Her first husband was John Foster-Barham, who died on 22 May 1838. She married secondly on 4 June 1839 George William Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon.

Lady Clarendon died on 4 July 1874 at her residence in Walpole Street, London.

A lengthy obituary appeared in the Morning Post (6 July 1874). This read in part: 'Women fill less conspicuous parts in life than men, but though their career is less eventful their influence is often hardly less important; and of Lady Clarendon it may be recorded that by her unfailing tact and excellent sense, no less than by her courteous manner and kindly hospitality, she proved herself during thirty years of married life the able helpmate of one of the most accomplished of English statesmen.'
