Françoise, princesse de Joinville

In 1843 Françoise de Bragance (1824-1898), daughter of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, was married in Rio de Janeiro to François, Prince de Joinville (1818-1900), the third son of Louis-Philippe, duc d’Orléans (1773-1850), King of the French.

Following the revolution of 1848 which ousted Louis-Philippe I, the Orléanist princes and dukes fled to England, where they settled at Claremont in Surrey. Many members of the family were visitors to Camille Silvy’s studio, while Silvy in turn visited Claremont during their exile, making some large format prints of a fête champêtre held there by the Orléans family in June 1864.
