(1808-1879)
26 July 1861

Volume 4, page 280, sitting number 5189.

[The sitter is identified as 'Colonel Edward King' in the Silvy daybooks and as 'Colonel King / 36th Regt.' on the album page.]

Born on 9 August 1808 in Chichester, Edward Richard King was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Henry King and Mary née Hewitt. He entered the Army in 1826 and gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 36th Regiment, retiring on full pay in 1857. He married, firstly, Mary Thorn, the daughter of William Thorn, in 1841. She died in 1857, and on 13 July 1869, he married, secondly, Mary Ann Bertie Galloway, daughter of Major Thomas Leech Galloway.

He appears on the 1861 census, a widower living with an unmarried daughter, Louisa Mary Henrietta King, and three servants at 17 Beaufoy Terrace, technically in Marylebone but actually in St John's Wood.

Colonel Edward Richard King died, aged 71, on 16 December 1879 at Fort William, his residence near Lismore in County Waterford, Ireland. He left an estate valued at £3000.
