Countess Cathcart

Born in 1831, Elizabeth Mary Crompton was the daughter of Sir Samuel Crompton, 1st Bt.

On 2 April 1850 at Thornton le Street in Yorkshire she married Alan Frederick Cathcart, son of General Charles Murray Cathcart, 2nd Earl Cathcart. Their marriage produced eleven children. 

Her husband succeeded to his estates and titles on 16 July 1859. 

The couple appear on the 1861 census living at Thornton le Street with three children, Lady Cathcart’s sister Fanny, and ten servants, including a butler, a coachman, a groom and a footman. 

In 1901 Lady Cathcsrt and her husband were living at 31 Grosvenor Place in London’s Belgravia with three unmarried daughters and nine servants. 

Lady Cathcart died on 13 April 1902 at 31 Grosvenor Place, London. She was buried on 17 April 1902 at Thornton le Street in Yorkshire. 

‘We regret to announce the death of Countess Cathcart, which occurred on Sunday at Grosvenor-place, S.W. Her ladyship, who had been ailing since February, and was 71 years of age, was the daughter of Sir Samuel Crompton, Bart. She married Earl Cathcart in 1850, and leaves eight children. The funeral will take place at Thornton-le-Street, Thirsk, the earl’s country seat’ (The Globe, 15 April 1902).
