Captain Charles George Luard
(1835-1864)

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Captain Luard' of the Royal Artillery, this is probably Captain Charles George Luard of the Royal Artillery, 5th Brigade.]

Born at Madras in India in or about 1835, he appears on the 1851 census, aged 16, a 'Gentleman Cadet' at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. He joined the Royal Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant on 14 August 1854 and was promoted 1st Lieutenant on 13 December 1854. On 14 March 1861 he was promoted Second Captain. 

He was initiated into the Freemasons in Belfast on 2 February 1859. He joined another lodge in Gibraltar on 2 April 1860.

He died, aged 29, on 9 December 1864 at 3 Gloucester Gardens, Hyde Park, London, the home of his father, Major-General John Kynaston Luard of Her Majesty's Indian Army. According to his death certificate, the cause of death was 'Disease of the Lung / 10 years / Hepatic Absess / 10 months / Acute Albuminuria / 5 weeks.' 

Captain Luard left effects valued at £200. He was buried on 13 December 1864 in Kensal Green Cemetery.
