Major Farmar

Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Major Farmar,' this is Major William Roberts Farmar 'of the 50th and 82nd Regts. who served in the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny, and was subsequently captain of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and for many years assistant-commandant of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley' (Torquay Times, 21 August 1908).
Born on 14 March 1845 in County Wexford, Ireland, his father was Hugh Hovell Farmar and his mother was Meliora née Mynors.
On 20 May 1851 at St Mary's Church in Cheltenham Captain William Roberts Farmar of the 82nd Regiment married Alicia Mary, only daughter of Captain Edward Stone Cotgrave of the Royal Navy (Gloucester Journal, 24 May 1851). Their marriage produced four children. The first Mrs Farmar died on 3 April 1861.
On 11 June 1863 Major Farmar married, secondly, Ellenor Louisa Giradot, daughter of Reverend William Lewis Girardot. Thier marriage produced ten children.
Major-General Farmar died on 26 July 1896 at Bedford House, Southampton. He left an estate valued at £1027.
