G. R. Grover, Esq. R.E.
(1840-1893)
19 March 1863
Volume 10, page 120, sitting number 12,849.
The sitter is identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'G.R. Grover Esq. R.E.' The middle initial is possibly a mistake, as the only likely match I can find is Lieutenant George Edward Grover of the Royal Engineers, who appears in Hart's Army List (1860).
Colonel George Edward Grover died in Chicago on 29 January 1893. At the time of his death he was Assistant Inspector General of Fortifications to the War Office and his usual residence was 34 De Vere Gardens, Kensington. He left an estate valued at £4961. According to the memorial cross over his grave in Chicago's Rosehill Cemetery, his date of birth was 2 June 1840.
'Colonel Grover served with the expedition to the Soudan in 1885, under Sir Gerald Graham, as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General — head of the Intelligence Department — and was present in the cavalry reconnaissance at Hasheen, in the engagement at Hasheen, at the attack on the convoy on the 26th March, and at the destruction of Tamai, and for his services was mentiioned in the despatches, breveted as lieutenant-colonel, and decorated with the Soudan medal, with clasps, and the Khedive's star. Colonel Grover formerly held the post of Director of Woiks at Portsmouth Dockyard [...]. During the time of his service here Colonel Grover won the goodwill and esteem of all with whom he came in contact, by his amiability of character, careful attention to business, and strict personal integrity' (Portsmouth Evening News, 2 February 1893).
