The dancer Marie Vernon, seen here as Fenella, the principal role in Daniel Auber’s opera La muette de Portici [The Dumb Girl of Portici]. A revival of an earlier work, this particular production opened at the Paris Opéra on 19 January 1863. Originally titled Masaniello, the plot concerns a Neapolitan uprising against Spanish rule in 1647.
