Lieutenant Herbert Richard Hardinge was an officer of the 32nd (The Cornwall) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry).

Born on 14 May 1840, he was the son of Major-General Richard Hardinge and Caroline Johnson née Callander. On 1 October 1884, he married Margaret Emilia Bruce, daughter of William Adair Bruce.

Herbert Richard Hardinge died on 7 April 1917 at the age of 76.

A brief obituary appeared in the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette (9 April 1917): 'The death occurred at his residence, Abbeville-House, Topsham-road, on Saturday morning, of Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Richard Hardinge. The deceased gentleman, who was 76 years of age, served in the 32nd Regiment (Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry), from which he retired many years ago, after serving in the Army at home and abroad, including the Cape. The son of Major-General Hardinge, Knight of Hanover, of the Royal Artillery, deceased came from a race of soldiers. Formerly a resident of Woolwich, he came to reside in Exeter 30 years ago, and was prominently identified with the work of the charitable institutions in the city, including the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and West of England Deaf and Dumb Institution, he having been a member of the committee of these institutions until failing health compelled him to retire. He had been an invalid for some years, and the end came on Saturday morning, the immediate cause of death being paralysis. Deceased leaves a widow, but no children.'
