John Murray Mordaunt
(1837-1923)
18 May 1861

Volume 3, page 260, sitting number 3722.

The second son of Sir John Mordaunt, 9th Baronet, John Murray Mordaunt was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford. In 1866 he married Elizabeth Evelyn Cotes. In 1876, in partnership with Thomas Oswald, he briefly went into shipbuilding. In a relatively short time Oswald, Mordaunt and Co built a number of notable ships.

John Murray Mordaunt died, aged 85, on 21 January 1923 at 101 Belgrave Road, Pimlico. He left effects valued at £1377.

According to his obituary in the Warwick and Warwickshire Advertiser (29 December 1923), he 'was well-known in his younger days as one of the best men to hounds in Warwickshire and the Midlands; for some years he acted as honorary secretary to the Warwickshire Hunt. He was prominent also in Warwickshire cricket, and was one of the few surviving members of the Zingari and Free Forester Clubs in their early associations. His cricketing abilities were transmitted to his three sons, of whom Mr Eustace Mordaunt, the present honorary secretary to the Free Foresters was, no doubt, the best. Mr J. M. Mordaunt was a frequent attendant at Hurlingham and the Gun Club in the '60's, and was an enthusiastic fisherman, principally in Norway, on the Vefsen and Olden rivers, and in more recent years on the Usk. He fished the latter river up to his 77th year. The second son of Sir John Mordaunt, 9th baronet, by his marriage to Caroline, daughter of Dr George Murray, Bishop of Rochester, he was born on December 30th, 1837, and was heir-presumptive of his nephew, Sir Osbert Mordaunt, the present baron. He married, in 1866, Evelyn, daughter of Mr John and Lady Louisa Cotes, of Woodcote and Pitchford, Salop; she died in 1914. He leaves three sons, of whom the eldest is Mr H. J. Mordaunt, and two daughters.'

[From an album probably compiled by either George Charles Pratt (1799-1866), 2nd Marquess Camden or by his son, John Charles Pratt (1840-1872), from 1866 3rd Marquess Camden.]
