Miss Ethel Bagot

Ethel Jane Bagot was the daughter of Major-General Edward Richard Bagot (1808-1874) and his wife Matilda (née Perkins).

She appears on the 1851 census, living at 34 Eaton Square in London with her parents, her sister Evelyn and her brothers Ponsonby and Villiers.

She was still living with her parents at the same address in 1871. Also present on the night of that year's census were six live-in servants.

On 21 January 1873 she married Major-General George Paton of the 24th Regiment of Foot (The South Wales Borderers). Her husband was later created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George for his services during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

A son, Ian Valentine Paton, was born on 14 February 1875. He followed the family tradition and served in the Army, reaching the rank of Major. He died on 19 April 1961.

Mrs Ethel Paton died, aged only 41, at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight on 11 October 1885.
