Captain H. M. F. Langton
(1829-1872)
26 October 1861

Volume 2, page 57, sitting number 1525.

Captain Henry Michael Faustinus Langton was born on 15 February 1829, the son of Michael Theobald Langton (1782-1844) and his wife, Mary Ryan. According to an internet source, he was born at Cadiz, which is plausible, as his grandfather, Michael Langton, was a merchant there. However, Captain Henry Langton appears on the 1861 census, living at 6 Southwick Place in Paddington, and he gives his place of birth as 'Bath, Somerset,' where, according to a life of their father hand-written in a small exercise book by one of Henry's sisters, the family were living at 7 South Parade.

At the time of the 1861 census, Henry, who was unmarried, gave 'South Militia Rifles' as his profession. Also present on the night of the census were Henry's mother, Mary, aged 65, born at Waterford in Ireland; his younger brother, Francis, aged 21; and his sister, Eliza, aged 25. The house had a staff of four live-in servants, including a butler and a lady's maid.

Captain Henry Michael Faustinus Langton of Southwick Place, Hyde Park, described in the abstract of his will as 'a Captain in the County of Louth Rifle Militia,' died on 8 July 1872 at Albano near Rome. He left effects valued at £5000. His brother Francis was his sole executor.

[The portrait comes from one of four albums that belonged to the family: one was compiled by Captain Henry Langton; one by his brother, Francis Langton; and two by Francis's wife, Margaret Cecilia Tobin, of which one was completed before her marriage and one compiled after. Several journals written by various members of the family came with the albums, and one, written by a Langton sister in 1840, contains an entry mentioning Henry's 11th birthday, from which his precise birthdate has been deduced.]
