Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Lynedoch Gardiner, later General Sir Henry Lynedoch Gardiner, served in Canada (1838)‚ the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny.

According to his obituary in the New York Times (16 December 1897): 'The late Sir Henry Lynedoch Gardiner, who had been since the early part of last year Commandant of the Horse Artillery, was born in 1820. He was a son of Gen. Sir Robert Gardiner, was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and entered the Royal Artillery in 1837, serving at Prescott, Canada, in that year and in the Canadian rebellion in the year following. He was raised to the rank of Major during the Indian mutiny and held that of Assistant Adjutant General from 1862 to 1867. In 1861 he was on the Royal Commission on Defense of Canada as a Lieutenant Colonel.'
