Charles Rahn, Esq.
(1816-1877)
6 October 1861

Volume 2, page 26, sitting number 1401.

Charles Rahn appears on the 1861 census, a dentist living in Basildon, Essex with his American wife Mary and their two children, Minnie (6) and Charles (4). Born in Nova Scotia, he claimed to be 38 years old, which would mean that he was born in or about 1823.

Mary Jane Rahn died, aged 45, on 28 August 1867 at Brook Street, Grosvenor Square and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery on 3 September 1867.

On 6 October 1870 at St George's, Hanover Square, 'Charles Rahn, Esq., of 80, Brook-street, Grosvenor-square, and of Shooter's-hill House, Pangbourne, Berks [married] Jane Ann, fourth daughter of the late Richard Budgen, Esq., Commander, R.N., formerly of Woolwich, and niece of John Budgen, Esq., Commander, R.N., Secretary to the late Queen Caroline' (Illustrated London News, 15 October 1870).

The couple appear on the 1871 census living at 80 Lower Brook Street, Mayfair. Charles was still a dentist. This year he was more specific and gave Halifax, Nova Scotia as his place of birth. He now claimed to be 45 years old, which would mean he was born in or about 1826.

Charles Rahn died on 15 October 1877 at The Gables, Ore Downs, Hastings, Sussex. He left an estate valued at £1500.

According to an announcement of his death in the Kent & Sussex Courier (19 October 1877), he was 61 years old when he died. The Civil Registration Death Index concurs. This means he was born in or about 1816.
