Mrs Brandreth
(1827-1897)
18 June 1863
Volume 10, page 296, sitting number 13,551.
[The sitter is identified as 'Mrs Brandetti' in the daybooks and the following sitter, presumably her husband, as 'E.L. Brandetti.' I can find no Brandetti with these initials, therefore I've conclued this is a mistake by Silvy's clerk and the surname ought to read 'Brandreth.']
Born in or about 1827, Louisa Marriott was the daughter of John Marriott, MD.
On 1 November 1849 in Liverpool she married Joseph Edward Lyall Brandreth, son of Joseph Pilkington Brandreth.
Their only child, a daughter named Alice Mary, was born in India around 1854. She was later Lady Alice Butcher, the wife of Sir John George Butcher, KC and MP.
The family appear on the 1881 census living at 32 Elvaston Place in Kensington. The household included Alice's first husband, a granddaughter named Dorothy, and seven servants. Joseph Brandreth described himself as a 'Magistrate Retired Indian Civil Service / Barrister not in practice.'
I can't find any record of Mrs Brandreth's death, but the following is taken from one of her husband's obituaries: 'His bearing was singularly quiet, and he was a model of courtesy, and the charming hospitality of Mr and Mrs Brandreth (the latter passed away in 1897), both in India and at Elvaston Place, will never be forgotten by the many friends who were privileged to enjoy it' (Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, New Series, 1864 - 1990).
