Maria Cristina Muñoz, marquesa de la Isabela
(1840-1921)

Born on 19 April 1840, Maria Cristina Muñoz was the daughter of the Queen Regent of Spain, Queen Maria Cristina of the Two Sicilies, widow of King Ferdinand VII and mother of Queen Isabel II. 

Shortly after the death of King Ferdinand VII, Maria Cristina secretly married an an ex-sergeant from the royal guard, Agustín Fernando Muñoz (1808–1873). Over the next twenty years, the marriage produced a total of eight children, but by 1840 the secret had leaked out and Maria Cristina was forced to step down as Queen-Regent. 

The sitter in this portrait is the fifth child of Queen Maria Cristina and her second husband, Muñoz. She was created marquesa de la Isabela. 

María Cristina Muñoz y de Borbón married José María Bernaldo de Quirós y González de Cienfueos, VIII marqués de Campo Sagrado, and had issue, including a son who succeeded her in her titles. 

She died on 19 Decemer 1921.
