Born Thomas Robert Brook Cartwright on 24 November 1830, his parents were Sir Thomas Cartwright and Maria Elizabeth Augusta née von Sandizell.

On 2 November 1858 he married Lady Elizabeth Jane Leslie-Melville, daughter of the 10th Earl of Leven. They had three daughters and one son.

Thomas Robert Brook Leslie Melville Cartwright of Newbottle Manor died, aged 90, on 21 January 1921, leaving an estate valued at £11,732. He was buried in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels at Aynhoe in Northamptonshire, in the same grave as his wife, who had died twenty-nine years earlier. 

A short obituary appeared in the Fife Free Press & Kirkcaldy Guardian (29 January 1921): 'At Newbottle Manor, Banbury, on Sunday, the death occurred in his 91st year of Mrs Thomas Robert Brook Leslie Melville Cartwright, JP, DL, second son of the late Sir Thomas Cartwright, GCH, of Aynhoe, Co Northampton, and Marie Elizabeth Augusta, daughter of Count von Sandizell of Bavaria. In 1858 he married Lady Elizabeth Jane, eldest daughter of the 10th Earl of Leven and Melville, who succeeded to the estate of Melville on the death of her father, and with her husband resided at Melville House, Monimail parish [near Collessie in Fife] till her death in 1892, when her daughter, Miss Elizabeth Harriet Leslie Melville (now Mrs Milbank Leslie Melville), succeeded to the estate. Mr Leslie Melville Cartwright was educated at Merton College, Oxford.'
