(1824-1893)

Volume 1, sitting number 725.

Born on 24 April 1824, Lord Alfred Spencer-Churchill was the son of George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough and Lady Jane Stewart, daughter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway.

He served as the Member of Parliament for Woodstock from 1845 to 1847, and again between 1857 and 1865. He was also a Justice of the Peace, a Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire and an officer in the Oxfordshire Yeomanry.

On 5 February 1857 he married the Honourable Harriet Louisa Hester Gough-Calthorpe, daughter of Frederick Gough, 4th Baron Calthorpe and Lady Charlotte Sophia Somerset. Together they had four daughters.

Lord Alfred Spencer-Churchill died on 21 September 1893 at his London residence in Rutland Gate. ‘His Lordship, who was sixty-nine years old, had been ailing for some time, but his end was a most peaceful one. He was a great-uncle of the Duke of Marlborough’ (Cheltenham Chronicle, 30 September 1893).
