Miss Hoare
(1822-1904)
1 March 1862

Volume 6, page 60, sitting number 7111.

[The sitter is identified only as ‘Miss Hoare’ in the Silvy books, but given that the preceding entry is  ‘Miss Georgina Hoare,’ this is probably Georgina’s older sister.]

Born on 15 August 1822, Frances Annette Hoare was the daughter of Henry Charles Hoare and his wife Anne Penelope née Ainslie. She was baptised on 26 September 1822 at St Mary’s, Marylebone.

She entered society when she was presented to Queen Victoria by her mother at a Drawing Room held at St James’s Palace on 14 May 1840 (Morning Post, 15 May 1840).

She appears on the 1851 census, aged 28, living at Wavendon House in Buckinghamshire. Also present on the night of the census were her parents, her half-sister Mary Ann Caroline Prince, her younger sister Georgina (who later took the veil) and her cousins Renee Elizabeth Lavina Hoare (daughter of Captain Richard Hoare) and Henry Gerard Hoare. The house was staffed by eighteen servants, with more living on a nearby farm.

Frances Annette Hoare never married. She appears on the 1901 census, the head of her own household at 35 Charles Street, Berkley Square, Mayfair.

She died there, aged 82, on 22 December 1904. ‘The death has just taken place in London, in her 83rd year, of Miss Frances Annette Hoare, eldest daughter of Henry Charles Hoare, of Wavendon, Bucks, and grand-daughter of Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, third baronet. Miss Hoare’s mother, who belonged to the Scotch house of Ainslie, died in 1887, in her 101st year. […] This branch of the well-known banking-house of Hoare descended from Sir Richard Hoare, who was M.P. for the City of London, and Lord Mayor towards the close of Queen Anne’s reign’ (Sheffield Evening Telegraph, 27 December 1904).

Her estate was valued at £19,468. She left ‘£500 each to the Clewer House of Mercy and the Order of the Sisters of Bethany, and £200 to the House of the Sisters of Mercy Servants of the Poor at Knowle, Bristol’ (London Daily Chronicle, 18 January 1905).
