He joined the army as an Ensign on 15 April 1813, rising to the rank of Major in the service of the 44th Regiment of Foot. He eventually became Colonel of the 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1866.

On 16 April 1838 he married Eleanora Frances Murray Macdowall, daughter of David Macdowall and Eleanor Mary née Grant.
Lieutenant-General Day Hort Macdowall died at Garthland on 14 September 1870.
‘Yesterday afternoon the remains of the late Lieut.-General Day Hort Macdowall, of Garthland House, who died on the 14th inst., were carried to their last resting place in the family vault in the ancient parish burying ground at Lochwinnoch. […] The deceased had a very active career as a military man, and served about 20 years in India. He resided at Lochwinnoch for about 25 years, having removed thither from his previous residence at Carruth, where his mother died. His military nature did not leave him after his active career, and he was known as one of the most energetic promoters of the Volunteer movement in Lochwinnoch. He died at the ripe age of 75, leaving a widow, but no family’ (North British Daily Mail, 21 September 1870).
