Born on 29 July 1819 at Gifford, East Lothian, Lady Louisa Jane Hay was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale, and his wife Lady Susan née Montagu, daughter of William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester.
On 4 June 1841 she married Robert Balfour Wardlaw Ramsay, son of Robert Wardlaw Ramsay.
Their marriage produced ten children.
Lady Louisa Jane Wardlaw Ramsay died on 9 September 1882 at Whitehill House, Mid-Lothian. She left an estate valued at £16,649.
‘The death is announced of Lady Louisa Jane Wardlaw Ramsay, which took place at midnight on Saturday at Whitehill House. Her Ladyship had been suffering for some weeks from an attack of rheumatic gout, but was rapidly approaching convalescence when she died suddenly of heart disease. The deceased lady, who was born on 29th July 1819, was the third daughter of George, eight Marquis [sic] of Tweeddale, and Susan Georgina, third daughter of William, fifth Duke of Manchester, and was a sister of the present Marquis [sic] of Tweeddale. On 4th June 1841 her Ladyship married Mr Robert Balfour Wardlaw Ramsay of Whitehill and Tillicoultry, whom she has survived little more than two months, Mr Wardlaw Ramsay having died on the 26th of June last. Se is survived by a son and seven daughters. Of the latter, three are married and four unmarried’ (Dundee Evening Telegraph, 12 September 1882).
