Mrs E.C. Marriott

Born in 1826 at Tyringham in Buckinghamshire, Louisa Agnes Praed was the daughter of James Buckwell Praed — of Tyringham, Bucks. and Trevethon, Cornwall — and his wife Sophia née Chaplin. James Buckwell Praed (1779-1837) was the Member of Parliament for Tyringham in Buckinghamshire. His father William Praed had represented St Ives in Parliament, as later did his brother. 

On 5 February 1856 at Blankney in Lincolnshire Louisa married Edmund Chase Marriott (Bucks Herald, 9 February 1856). 

The following year a son was born at 16 Montagu Square in Marylebone. Baptised Cecil Mackworth Marriott at St Mary’s, Bryanston Square, on 28 September 1857, he died in July 1865 at the age of 8. He was buried at Adlestrop in Gloucestershire. 

In June 1867 it was announced that ‘His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has been pleased to appoint Edmund Chase Marriott, of Adlestrop House, in the County of Gloucester, Esq., to be Havener [harbourmaster] and Keeper of the Ports and Foreshores of the Duchy of Cornwall in the counties of Cornwall and Devon’ (The Globe, 15 June 1867). 

The couple appear on the 1871 census living in Adlestrop, Gloucesershire. Also present on the night of the census were ten live-in servants, including a butler, a footman and a groom. Edmund gave ‘Havener of Duchy of Cornwall’ as his profession.

Louisa Agnes Marriott died ‘after prolonged illness,’ aged 64, on 24 April 1891 at Earl’s Court, Tunbridge Wells in Kent (Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, 1 May 1891).
