George Du Pre Porcher 
(1825-1876)

[Identified only as ‘Porcher, Esq.’ in the Silvy daybooks, an inked inscription recto on the mount in the lower margin reads: ‘Dupre Porcher Esq.’]

Born in or about 1825, George Du Pre Porcher was the eldest son of Reverend George Porcher of Midgham in Berkshire.

He completed his education at Balliol College, Oxford (BA, 1845; MA, 1849) and in 1849 he joined the Inner Temple. 

On 7 September 1854 at Leamington he married Emmeline, ‘youngest daughter of the late George Stratton, Esq., formerly Member of Council at Fort St. George’ (John Bull, 16 September 1854). George gave ‘Barrister at Law’ as 

Their residence in 1860 was 45 Bryanston Square in Marylebone. 

The couple appear on the 1861 census at 20 Beauchamp Square in Leamington. This was the residence of Mrs Porcher’s sister Anne and brother-in-law George M.Gowan, a retired Army captain. George gave ‘Barrister in practice’ as his profession. 

George Du Pre Porcher died, aged 52, on 10 March 1876 at his residence, 12 Connaught Place, on the north side of London’s Hyde Park. He left an estate valued at £40,000.
