Worsley Battersby
(1826-1896)

Born on 28 May 1826 at Hindley in Lancashire, Worsley Battersby was the son of merchant Charles Battersby. 

He appears on the 1851 census living in Marsh Lane in Bootle cum Linacre in Lancashire. The household also included his two younger brothers, a younger sister and two female servants. He gave ‘Coal Merchant’ as his profession. 

Ten years later, aged 35 and unmarried, he was still in Marsh Lane, now living with his unmarried sister Frances and two servants. He gave ‘Coal Dealer’ as his profession. 

On 30 May 1870 at St John’s in Croydon he married Jessie May, daughter of William May of Croydon. Their marriage produced seven children. 

A directory of 1885 lists him living at 72 Onslow Gardens in South Kensington, London. 

In 1886 he purchased the manor of Timberscombe in Somerset. Henceforth he and his family lived at Knowle Manor near Dunster. 

When the 1891 census was taken Worsley and Jessie Battersby were living at Knowle with their seven children, aged 13 to 2, his sister Margaret, two nieces, two nurses and four servants, all female. Worsley gave ‘JP [and] Ship owner’ as his profession. 

Worsley Battersby died, aged 71, on 27 June 1896 at Knowle, leaving an estate valued at £29,280. He was buried in the churchyard of St Petrock’s in Timberscombe, Somerset.
