Miss Charlotte Baker

[The Silvy daybooks identify the sitter as "Miss C. Baker' and an inked inscription recto on the print identifies her as 'Miss Baker.' A further inscription verso in the same hand reads 'Fenton.']

Born in or about 1811, Charlotte Baker was the daughter of William Baker (died 1833), an architect from Audlem in Cheshire who bought the estate and manor of Fenton Culvert in Staffordshire, together with a pottery factory. 

Charlotte never married. She appears on the 1861 census living in Fenton with her older brother William, who had taken over the running of the pottery on the death of their father. William described himself as an ‘Eware [earthenware?] manufacturer employing 650 persons & Farmer of 42 acres employing 3 men.’ Charlotte described herself as a ‘Railway Proprietor.’

William died at Fenton in 1865. Charlotte died on 26 December 1874, also at Fenton. She left an estate valued at £60,000.
