Captain and Mrs Frederick Caldwell

Born on 16 March 1817 at Hilborough in Norfolk, Frederick Edmund Caldwell was the fifth son of Ralph Caldwell of Hilborough Hall. His mother was Louisa née Isham, daughter of Sir Justinian Isham of Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire. He was baptised at Hilborough on 27 August 1817.

On completing his education at Caius College, Cambridge, he entered the Army in 1835, serving with the 78th Regiment. He attained the rank of Lieutenant in 1838 and that of Captain in 1847. He retired from the Army in 1851. 

In 1854 Frederick Caldwell married Charlotte Meggison, who was born at Ashford in Kent in 1824, the daughter of Thames and Mary Meggison. 

The family appear on the 1861 census living at Farm House, Langford, Norfolk. For his profession, Frederick gave ‘Retired Army Officer & Agent / Occupier of 950 acres employing / 15 men - 5 boys - 1 woman.’  The household included the Caldwell’s three young sons (aged 4, 3 and 2) and four servants, all female.

In 1871 the couple were living with daughter Mary, aged 7, and four servants at Candover House in Brown Candover, Hampshire. Presumably the sons were all away at boarding school. 

In 1891 the Caldwells were still living at Candover House, still with their unmarried daughter Mary. The household now included three female servants. Frederick gave his profession as ‘Land Agent.’ 

In 1901 Captain Caldwell was living at Elvetham in Hampshire with daughter Mary and two servants (a parlour maid and a cook). Charlotte was at a lodging house in Bath on the night of the census. 

Frederick Edmund Caldwell died, aged 90, on 1 January 1908 at Hartford Bridge, Winfield, Hampshire. He left an estate valued at £12,243.

Charlotte Caldwell died on 31 March 1913, also at Hartford Bridge. Her estate was valued at £9798.
