Mary Augusta Booth and Janet Booth
(1838-1898) and (1840-1915)

[Identified only as ‘The Misses Booth’ in the Silvy daybooks, an inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitters as ‘Janet and Mary A. Booth / Glendon Hall.’

Born in 1838 at Glendon Hall near Kettering in Northamptonshire, Mary Augusta Booth was the daughter of John Booth and his wife, Augusta née de Capell Brooke. She was baptised at Rushton on 29 June 1838.

Mary Augusta Booth never married. She died, aged 60, on 24 August 1898 at Suffolk Lodge, Rothwell, Northamptonshire, leaving an estate valued at £6365.

Her sister Janet Booth was born in 1840 at Great Oakley Hall in Northamptonshire, her mother’s ancestral home. On 25 April 1861 she married Captain Joseph Thomas Wetherall, who had retired from the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons the previous month. 

‘On the 25th inst., at St. George’s, Hanover-square, J.T. Wetherall, Esq., late Captain Inniskilling Dragoons, second son of the late Rev. John Wetherall, of Ruston Rectory, Northamptonshire, to Janet, youngest daughter of the late John Booth, Esq., of Glendon Hall, in the same county’ (Morning Chronicle, 29 April 1861). 

Their marriage produced eight children. 

In 1901 the couple were living at Loddington House in Northamptonshire with four of their unmarried children and three servants. Mr Wetherall died suddenly the following year, at the age of 67, leaving an estate valued at £10,294. 

Janet Booth died on 22 August 1915 at Mount Vernon, Kimbolton, Northamptonshire. Her estate was valued at £1891.
