Thomas Meyrick
(1827-1921)

Born Thomas Charlton on 14 March 1837 at Wellington in Shropshire, he assumed his maternal grandfather's surname Meyrick by Royal Licence in 1858. 

On 10 April 1860 he married Mary Rhoda Hill, daughter of Colonel Richard Frederick Hill. Their marriage produced nine children (seven were still alive in 1911).

In 1868 he was elected to Parliament as the representative for the town of Pembroke in West Wales, a seat he held until the general election of 1874. 

He also served in the army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. 

In 1880 he was created 1st Baronet Meyrick of Bush in the County of Pembroke. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1898 and was promoted to Knight Commander (KCB) in 1910. 

He appears on the 1911 census living at Apley Lodge [sic] in Shropshire with his wife, a daughter and four grandchildren and thirteen servants, including a butler and two footmen. 

Colonel Sir Thomas Meyrick died on 30 July 1921 at Apley Castle, Shropshire. He left an estate valued at £132,408 .

'The death has taken place, at the age of 84, of Sir Thomas Meyrick, Bart., C.B., Apley Castle, Wellington. He served as High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire in 1877, and was M.P. from 1868 to 1874. For some years he commanded the old Shropshire Militia (now the 3rd Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry). The funeral will take place at Wellington to-morrow' (Birmingham Daily Gazette, 1 August 1921).
