Mrs Willoughby Furnivall

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as Mrs Willoughby C. Furniral [sic], this is the wife of Willoughby Charles Furnivall.]

Born at Minehead in Somerset, Frances Eliza Gage was the youngest daughter of William Gage of Minehead in Somerset, who according to the 1851 census was a ‘General Practitioner in Medicine and Surgery.’ 

On 3 September 1862 at Minehead she married civil engineer Willoughby Charles Furnivall of Lahore.

At the time of the 1881 census, she was living at ‘Florian,’ a house in Newton Abbot, Devon, with her four children, aged 8 to 3, and four servants, including a nurse and an under-nurse. All of her children were born in India. Her husband was elsewhere the night of the census. 

Mrs Frances Eliza Furnivall died, aged 49, on 28 July 1888 at ‘Florian,’ Newton Abbot, Devon. She left an estate valued at £1450.

Her husband died on 16 May 1901 at ‘The Chestnuts,’ Granville Road, Broadstairs, Kent. He left an estate valued at £34,806.

‘We regret to announce the death of Mr Willoughby Charles Furnivall at Broadstairs last Thursday. Mr Furnivall joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1869 as superintending-engineer on the Delhi and Rewari Railway, and held, among other appointments, before his retirement in 1886, those of director of construction for State railways and chief engineer and secretary to the Chief Commissioner, British Burma’ (Railway News, 25 May 1901).
