Born William Augustus Halliday in London on 23 November 1817, he was the son of Captain (later Admiral) John Richard Delap Halliday and his wife Hon. Lady Elizabeth Stratford, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Aldborough. In 1821 his father changed his surname from Halliday to Tollemache (his mother’s maiden name).

William gained the rank of Captain in the 2nd Life Guards.

On 3 June 1846 he married Marguerite Purves, daughter of John Home Purves. 

In 1857 Palmerston appointed him to the Treasureship of the Kent County Courts. 

He and his wife appear on the 1871 census living at Ridge Green House at Nutfield in Surrey. William gave ‘Treasurer of County Courts’ as his profession. Also present on the night of the census were five servants, including a coachman and a farm bailiff. 

In 1901 William was living at Risby Cottage at Risby near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. He gave ‘Retired Captain Household Brigade’ as his profession. He was living with a niece and two female servants. 

William Augustus Tollemache died, aged 93, at Risby on 4 February 1911. He left an estate valued at £1674.
