Marchioness of Tweeddale

Born at Kimbolton Castle on 18 September 1797, Lady Susan Montagu was the third daughter of William Montagu, from 1788 the 5th Duke of Manchester. Her mother was Lady Susan Gordon, daughter of the 4th Duke of Gordon.

On 28 March 1816 she married George Hay, from 1804 the 8th Marquess of Tweeddale. Her husband, a veteran of the Peninsular War, had served on the Staff of the Duke of Wellington. When he was subsequently posted to India, Lady Tweeddale accompanied him during his six years’ command at Madras.

Lady Tweeddale died, aged 72, at Charlotte Street in Edinburgh on 5 March 1870.

According to her obituary in the Berkshire Chronicle (12 March 1870), she ‘was remarkable through life for her strong good sense and almost masculine understanding. She had a numerous and distinguished family. Her children were 14 in all, 11 of whom survived her.’ One of daughters was the Duchess of Wellington, wife of the 2nd Duke of Wellington. Another daughter was the estranged wife of Sir Robert Peel, eldest son of Peel the Prime Minister.
