J. Oxley, Esq.
7 May 1862
Volume 6, page 279, sitting number 7985
The sitter is identified as ‘J. Oxley, Esq.’ in the Silvy daybooks. One possible candidate for a fuller identification is John Timothy Oxley (1800-1866).
Born on 14 June 1800 at Wakefield in Yorkshire, he was the son of John Oxley of Wakefield.
On 18 September 1832 he married Isabella Stewart, daughter of John Stewart of Liverpool.
When the census was taken in 1851 the couple were living at Clapham Common North Side. John gave ‘General Merchant’ as his profession. The household included five servants.
At the time of the 1861 census, Mr and Mrs Oxley were staying at the West Cliff Hotel in Folkestone. John now described himself as a ‘Retired Merchant.’
John Timothy Oxley of Clapham Common died, aged 66, at Fen Place in Sussex on 10 August 1866, leaving an estate valued at £70,000.
