[An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'In mem.[oriam] 30/11/64.' It cannot be a coincidence that on that date Madame Silvy, wearing a very similar costume, sat for her husband in almost exactly the same pose, but against a different studio background. So far I have been unable to establish a connection between the two women.]
