Captain T.H.M. Martin

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Capt. T.H.M. Martin.' this is almost certainly Captain Thomas Hutchinson Mangles Martin, who enrolled in the Royal Navy on 11 October 1848.]

Born on 6 October 1824, the eldest son of Admiral Thomas Martin who died in 1868, like his father he attained the rank of Admiral in the service of the Royal Navy.

On 19 June 1866 at Holy Trinity in Paddington he married Charlotte Roadley Egginton, daughter of Samuel Hall Egginton. 

The couple appear on the 1871 census living at Bitterne, today an eastern suburb of Southampton, with Charlotte's younger sister and three female servants. 

Admiral Thomas Hutchinson Mangles Martin died, aged 67, on 8 December 1896 at Bitterne Lodge, Southampton, leaving an estate valued at £6081. 

According to his obituary in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph (12 December 1896), 'He served as lieutenant of the Terrible throughout her service in the Black Sea during the Crimean War, being present at the bombardment of Odessa, at the running action with six Russia steamers of Sevastopol, and at many reconnoitring expeditions under the fire of the enemy's forts at Sevastopol, also at Odessa, destroying the wreck of the Tiger under fire. [...] Admiral Martin married in 1866 Charlotte, eldest daughter of Mr. S. H. Egginton, North Ferriby, East Yorkshire.'
